"Thinking for yourself" better educational strategy for learning
Give college students less instruction and more freedom to think for themselves in laboratory classes, and the result may be a four-fold increase in their test scores.

I won't be totally scientific in suggesting that letting students learn from doing in all kinds of courses leads to better learning and retention, but all my research has shown the same kind of advantage. An unintended outcome I found in my research, was the number of students who became instructors themselves after going through project-based classes where there were problems to solve in order to create some real product.
