Connecting across borders and cultures: Iranian ex-pat journalist analyzes Iran's media

Citizen journalism serves up local and hyperlocal news very effectively. Its role as a communication tool across cultural and geographic distances is important, too. Omid Habibinia lives in Switzerland because he had to flee Iran. I met him at the 2005 Citizen Journalist Forum, sponsored by Ohmynews.com when citizen journalists from around the world  met in Seoul, Korea. How hard it is for the 4 out of 5 English-only Americans, as well as those who don't read or speak Farsi, to get a sense of what media in Iran presents to its audiences. Omid's work can open a small window on a world we are unable to enter via our usual method, reading.



Iranian journalist, media researcher and film critic Omid Habibinia is among the many journalists who have left Iran after feeling the pressure of the country’s repressive atmosphere. A former employee at the Islamic Republic News Agency’s TV broadcast, Seda va Sima, Habibinia currently resides in Switzerland. He has used his expertise to make ends meet, and now writes for a variety of Web sites and has a blog, Opposite Mirrors. Habibinia says he remains hopeful.
