Graphic Novels, Let's Just Call Them Comics, Do Science
I didn't write the squib below, but I would have, if I had found all these good cartoons. I am currently recommending Howard Zinn's " A People's History of American Empire" done as a comic by Mike Konopacki (Author) and Paul Buhle (Author) but here are a sheft of science comics. In the news, too, is Scott McCloud's <a herf="http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/">comic about Google's Chrome</a>.
I was a comic book fan way before I was a mom. I've always liked exposing my kids at an early age to simple forms of complex ideas; I think it makes concepts familiar, letting kids get comfortable with sometimes difficult topics before they're presented with the adult, "serious" versions - comics are the perfect medium for that! (Anyone remember the old Classics Illustrated comics?) Don't worry that kids might be too young for these books - I've noticed my kids read them before they were really ready to understand everything they read, then came back to them when they were older and got more out of them. There are a number of comics about science and technology; these are just some of our favorites.
